So I wanted to write today about the program I created – “ Embracing change “
I guess until a few weeks ago I never realized that this too could apply to an unexpected change. So what happens to us when we have an unexpected change or a quick pivotal change caused by a circumstance that you have no control over? Well when I had a situation occur I began to fight or resist the circumstance in order to cope. There are 2 reasons I write this article 1) we cannot control unexpected change 2) we can only control our feelings involved in the change 3) how we as human beings can resist it or accept it
Resisting the change feels like pushing the problem away or wallowing in it for so long that you become an emotional mess. Allowing the unexpected change feels like you could think clearly and gain some clarity. When I had a unexpected change occur a few weeks ago. I went through the above process: mad and sad,
How often does this happen to us in our lives and we seem to fight the circumstance or really the feeling that comes along with the circumstance?
Traffic is a good example –get mad at the traffic or accept that you will get there when you arrive. On a more serious life note there is : divorce, losing your job, relationship break ups, weight gain, bad health
Can we really control the outcome of these events? Can we really control an experience that happens to us? Well the answer here is no for the most part…..What we can control is how we feel about the circumstance. I know that experiencing a loss creates feelings but the danger comes when we don’t reach for a better feeling place in order to get through the situation that is so unexpected.
You can resist a feeling by using denial, you can resist a feeling by fighting it and you can resist a feeling by running from it.
How do you cope with the unexpected change or circumstance?
How do you do this? 5 words to keep in mind –ALLOW - I encourage clients to allow themselves to go through the feelings they are feeling and to also reach for a better feeling thoughts.
The thoughts we have are powerful and when we choose to believe just one that creates suffering or pain we find ourselves in a negative frame of mind attracting bad things.
Healthier approach to the unexpected change
Allow
Go through feelings
Accept unexpected
Reach for a better feeling thought
